Michigan Water Levels

Posted Friday, March 1, 2013

Michigan's water levels are reaching record lows and pose a dangerous threat to the fishing and tourist industries for our coastal communities. While the state government has proposed $21 million in funding to 49 harbors (for a short-term fix), many people worry about how they will adapt. In the spring of 2012, two teams of Urban and Regional Planning students from Michigan State University conducted Port Studies for Alpena and Cheboygan in cooperation with the Northeast Michigan Council of Governments. These students examined the existing conditions, commercial activity, and amenities in each community and then provided recommendations for each port based on their research.
