Student-Led, Faculty-Guided Project - Spring, 2017

This project focused on the automobile-oriented Fairlane Planning Area located in the center of the City. Dearborn planners inspired the students to develop a redevelopment project to integrate the mall site with the rest of the Dearborn community. It was the City's goal to partner with MSU student planners to create a Vision Plan and Economic Development Strategy that will include recommendations for connectivity, beautification, urban design and redevelopment opportunities. The City would like to attract commercial and residential redevelopment, improve connections between the east and west Dearborn, identify underutilized land, and enhance pedestrian access.

Jeffrey Polkowski, City of Dearborn
Jeffrey Polkowski is a Planner for the City of Dearborn, where he works to implement projects and legislation that will have a positive effect on the future development of the community. Prior to his relocation to Michigan, Jeff worked as a City Planner for the City of Watertown, NY. There he utilized environmental and urban planning techniques to build an inviting urban riverfront. Passionate about Great Lake cities, the move from North Country New York to Southeast Michigan was a natural fit for him. Originally from New York City, Jeff graduated from the State University of New York College at Brockport with a degree in Earth Sciences then went on to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to complete a Masters of Community and Regional Planning and Water Recourses Planning and Management.
