The changing environment in American universities is causing a shift in how students may approach courses. According to an article in the New York Times on April 29, 2013 (Colleges Adapt Online Courses to Ease Burden), in today's system many students do not complete their degrees in the standard four-year time period and are required to take several remedial level courses before they are able to begin their specific studies. Due to this shift, some universities are looking at how "Massive Open Online Courses" (MOOCs) may play a role in the future of the secondary degree.
